Most styles require a page number for some or all in-text references. If the work you are referencing does not contain page numbers:

APAuse chapter numbers, section headings, and paragraph numbers.

Chicago: use a paragraph or other section numbers.   

IEEE: use chapter headings, paragraphs or appendixes

MLA: use chapter numbers
