Question

How do I control when my research is published in Federation.figshare and link it to publications?

Federation.figshare allows you to manage when your research becomes publicly available and connect it to related publications.

Embargo options

You can delay access to your work using an embargo:

  • File embargo – metadata is visible, but the files are hidden
  • Full record embargo – both metadata and files are hidden
  • Timeframe – choose a set period (e.g. 1, 4, 6, 12 months, or 2 years) or select a specific release date

The record will display that an embargo is in place and show when it will end. You can edit the embargo date until the item is published. This also allows you to share a DOI with publishers or reviewers ahead of release.

Linking your research to publications

You can create strong links between your data and publications using DOIs:

  • Reserve a DOI before publishing your dataset (Manage Identifiers → Reserve DOI)
  • Include this DOI in your manuscript
  • Add the article DOI or URL to your figshare record (Related Materials)

Once published:

  • Your dataset links to the article
  • The article links back to your dataset

This two-way linking improves visibility, citation, and research transparency.
