It’s a good idea to keep EndNote updated. Updates help fix minor bugs and often include new features or improvements.

Minor updates

Minor updates are small changes within the same version, for example, updating EndNote Desktop from 21.01 to 21.5.

To install the latest minor update:

  1. Open EndNote Desktop.
  2. Select Help.
  3. Choose Check for updates and follow the prompts.

Major updates

Major updates involve moving to a newer version of EndNote, for example, from EndNote Desktop 20 to 21.

On a Federation University–managed computer (such as a university‑issued laptop or an on‑campus computer):

  1. Open the Software Centre
  2. Search for EndNote
  3. Select Update.

On your personal computer:
You’ll need to download and install the latest Federation University EndNote installer to upgrade to the new version.

Keep your data safe

Before updating EndNote, it’s important to create a backup of your library. This gives you peace of mind and ensures your references are safe in case anything goes wrong during the update.

It is also best practice to have your EndNote synced to the online version for safety and flexibility.
